You are no longer strangers and sojourners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God. - Ephesians 2:19

Parish History

The Episcopal Church was establishing a presence in the Northwest at about the same time that Pullman was growing into a community of note -- and there was community interest in seeing an Episcopal church established in Pullman.

On October 29th, 1891, the first Bishop of the Washington Territory, The Rt. Rev. John Paddock, was invited to Pullman. A well attended service was held on October 30th and Bishop Paddock gave his consent the next day to the formation of a mission at Pullman. St. Katherine's Mission was built shortly thereafter, the first Baptism at the church taking place on March 19, 1892. The original St. Katherine's Mission building, if it existed today, would be about 20 feet in the air above the westbound lanes of Davis Way about in line with State Street.

Who We Are

The people of St. James are a community of faith rooted in God's unconditional love, seeking to express that love to one another, our neighbors, and the world.

About St. James'

St. James', Pullman, is an Episcopal Church, a member of the worldwide Anglican community.  We are "full service" parish of moderate size, with average Sunday attendance of about 85.  We offer educational programs for pre-school age through adults.

We are liturgically innovative, with a recently constructed space for worship which allows us to focus separately on the principal rites of Baptism, Eucharist, and the Word.  Our choir and music, under the direction of Elena Panchenko, are a special point of pride, and we are served by two deacons: The Rev. Ted Nitz, with specialties in church history and liturgics, and Toni Sarai-Clark, who serves this church and the diocese in diversity issues, thanks to her Native and African American background

We also have a strong interest in social justice issues, and, from time to time, have made our leadership and building available for controversial campus issues. We also put a large effort into an August rummage sale under the leadership of Carol Gay.  Monies raised go to various groups in the community.

We have a number of groups with more special purposes, such an active Episcopal Church Women (ECW) group, and other more informal gatherings, like a Sunday morning coffee group, a men's breakfast, Bible studies, reading groups.  With Washington State University just across the street, we carry on a multi-faceted ministry there, including strong support of an ecumenical ministry and a faculty reading group. For nearly three decades we have shared our space with Community Child Care Center, which has nearly sixty pre-schoolers in our building during the week.

Our office is served by the very capable Carol Porter. If you call, you may get an answering machine, but we pay close attention to both inquiries and visitors.
